MOCAK - Museum of Contemporary Art
Krakow
Contemporary art in a modern space in Krakow.
Krakow had badly needed a contemporary art museum for some time until MOCAK came along to fill that gap nicely in 2010. Since that time MOCAK has been the home to a great variety of temporary innovative exhibitions as well as the permanent collection of art in this interesting museum in the Podgorze district of Krakow.
Designed by Caludio Nardi Architects, the building's rather industrial looking exterior where there is the name of the museum reflects the nature of this area which used to be an industrial part of the city. Next to the museum on Lipowa Street, you can also find the iconic Oskar Schindler Museum. Inside MOCAK, there is a bright, modern space where collections of various types of art can be viewed in comfort. It consists of two floors and a combination of concrete and glass.
The permanent exhibition features the work of Polish and international artists. It features work from artists such as Tomasz Bajer, Tymek Borowski, Edward Dwurnik, Leopold Kessler, Kristof Kintera and more. The temporary exhibitions change regularly and have different thematic ideas.
The MOCAK library is open for all those interested in contemporary art. Here you can find exhibition catalogues, albums and MOCAK publications. There is free wi-fi and you can use computer stations and online catalogues. The Mieczyslaw Porebski Library is named after the Polish historian who donated his collection to the museum. There is also a bookshop which is also well equipped with contemporary art publications including MOCAK's.
MOCAK's education department offers workshops for people of all ages. They especially target people with disabilities, teachers, people from smaller towns and also those from the area. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11am - 7pm and is free on Tuesdays.
