Description
Discription: The Old Synagogue is the oldest synagogue preserved in Poland. It was erected in the 15th century on the model of German and Czech gothic synagogues. In 1570, it was rebuilt by the Italian builder Mateusz Gucci, who gave it a Renaissance form. However, he retained the previous, two-nave plan of the building and reconstructed its cross-rib vault. In the second half of the 16th century and in the first half of the 17th century, a vestibule, two prayer rooms for women and a house of the Community Board were added to the Synagogue. The whole of the buildings formed the religious and administrative center of the Jewish community in Kazimierz. Before and after World War I, it underwent a multi-stage restaurant, designed in 1904, 1913 and 1923 by Zygmunt Hendel. In 1941, when the Germans were creating the Kraków ghetto, it was taken over by the German Trust Office (Treuhandstelle) and used as a warehouse. Her equipment was destroyed. At the end of 1944, its ceiling collapsed, possibly destroyed deliberately. In the years 1956–1959 it was restored. On the basis of an agreement concluded on 30 October 1959 between the Jewish Religious Community in Kraków and the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków, a museum was established there. The branch was established in 1958. It collects monuments in the field of Jewish history and culture, primarily those related to the history and culture of Kraków Jews. It disseminates knowledge about the life, culture and traditions of the Jewish community through exhibitions, educational and popularizing activities and providing access to a specialist book collection. What will you learn during the visit? 1. History of synagogue and Krakow's Jews 2. History of time of occupation 3. You will see numerous elements of Judaic religion 4. You will learn Jewish customs and cultureIncludes
