Description
The Desert, located about an hour northwest of Kraków, is a vast area of sand dunes and scrubland. It is a unique landscape created by medieval silver and lead mining, which stripped the land so extensively that sand replaced the original soil. From the viewpoint, you can see dunes stretching to the surrounding tree line, an unusual sight for Central Europe.
The tour then proceeds to a ruined royal castle rising from limestone outcrops near a historic mining town. This quieter castle is the first stop on the Eagles' Nest trail, offering panoramic views of the Jura upland and an opportunity to understand the local landscape.
Lunch is served in the market square of Olkusz, a medieval mining capital known for its silver production that helped build Kraków’s churches and support Polish royalty. Guests can enjoy a traditional Polish snack called 'Zapiekanka' while experiencing the town's historical atmosphere.
In the afternoon, the group visits Ogrodzieniec Castle, an impressive fortress perched on a white limestone ridge overlooking the Krakowsko-Częstochowska Upland. Visitors explore on foot and climb accessible towers while absorbing the scale and history of the site.
The day concludes with a traditional Polish dinner at a karczma, a rustic inn where the emphasis is on authentic regional cooking. The tour returns to Kraków by late afternoon.
