Description
Visit one of the world’s most well-preserved mines, the Wieliczka Salt Mine, located just outside Krakow. Established in the 13th century, this mine operated until 2007 and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. Its original tunnels span 300 kilometers across nine levels, reaching depths of up to 327 meters.
The tour begins with a descent into the mine via a 380-step staircase to the first level at 64 meters deep. The return to the surface is by lift from the third level, 135 meters underground.
Inside, you will see impressive corridors alongside detailed statues and figures made from rock salt by both historic miners and modern sculptors. These artworks provide insight into the mine’s rich heritage.
The site has a long tradition of tourism and has welcomed notable visitors such as Nicolaus Copernicus, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Frederic Chopin.
After exploring the mine and its history, the tour concludes with transportation back to Krakow.
