Description
This comprehensive guided walking tour offers an insightful overview of Kraków’s Jewish heritage and World War II history. Led by a licensed expert guide, you will visit key sites that collectively reveal the city’s complex past.
Begin in Kazimierz, a district that was once a center of Jewish life where Jewish and Christian cultures coexisted. The tour starts on Szeroka Street, lined with synagogues and historic townhouses dating from the 16th to 18th centuries. Visit the Old Synagogue, Poland’s oldest preserved synagogue now serving as a Jewish history museum. Continue to the Remuh Synagogue and Cemetery, an important religious site, then pass the Kupa Synagogue, traditionally serving the poorest residents, and the Tempel Synagogue, which is still active as a cultural center. The tour ends at Plac Nowy, a square with cafés, markets, and local art.
Next, visit Schindler’s Enamel Factory, now a museum dedicated to Kraków under Nazi occupation. Explore the exhibition on Oskar Schindler’s life, focusing on how he saved over a thousand Jewish workers during the Holocaust. Photographs, artifacts, and reconstructed scenes depict the harsh realities of the period, while Schindler’s story reflects courage amid oppression.
Finally, explore the Kraków Ghetto area in Podgórze, seeing the remaining sections of the Ghetto Walls, which illustrate the boundaries imposed on the Jewish population. The route continues to Ghetto Heroes Square, a place of remembrance marked by a memorial of empty metal chairs symbolizing lives lost during deportations.
