Description
'Nowa Huta' means 'new steel mill' in English. This large manufacturing plant and its adjacent residential district were built after World War II under the communist government. Designed to contrast with Krakow’s historical religious and traditional character, Nowa Huta represented the ideals of a socialist ‘new people’ living without religion and trusting communist ideology.
On this walking tour, a licensed local guide explains the district's construction history and utopian socialist concepts. The walk begins at Central Square, formerly named after Lenin, continues along Avenue of Roses, the main street of Nowa Huta, and moves through significant sites including the area of the battle for the cross, the first church built in the “godless city,” and locations tied to the Solidarność labor strikes. The tour highlights monumental neo-classical Stalinist architecture throughout the district.
