Description
Embark on a poignant journey through the history of the Plaszow concentration camp in Krakow, a site that symbolizes the suffering and resilience of the Jewish community during World War II. Originally established in 1942 as a forced labor camp, Plaszow was expanded into a concentration camp in 1944, becoming a major site for the deportation of Jews from the Krakow ghetto. Over time, Jews from other regions like Bochnia, Tarnow, Wieliczka, Rzeszow, Przemysl, and Szebnie, as well as Polish citizens, were imprisoned here.
This tour begins at the Ghetto Memorial at Bohaterów Getta Square, where you will visit the Ghetto Pharmacy Museum, providing a glimpse into the daily lives of Krakow’s Jewish community before their deportation to Plaszow. As you continue, you will see a preserved section of the Ghetto Wall along Lwowska Street, a stark reminder of the harsh conditions the Jewish community endured during the Nazi occupation.
Afterward, we’ll take a tram to the site of the former camp, where you can explore the remains of the camp’s railway station, warehouses, officer’s club, and administration buildings. These locations offer a glimpse into the daily suffering faced by prisoners forced to work under brutal conditions. A particularly haunting stop is the Grey House, also known as the camp’s torture house, where many were subjected to horrific treatment.
Another chilling site is Amon Göth’s villa, the former residence of the notorious SS officer who commanded the camp with extreme cruelty. The villa stands as a grim reminder of the power and terror the Nazis wielded over their victims. At the Plaszow site, history is preserved not just through buildings and ruins, but also through memorials. The Plaszow Camp Memorial at C-pit honors the many victims who perished here. The execution site at H-hill offers a sobering insight into the scale of atrocities committed, where countless innocent lives were taken.
You will also visit the remains of the pre-war Jewish cemetery, a quiet and reflective place that once served as the final resting place for Krakow’s Jewish community. Continuing the tour, you will see the site of the second camp gate and the industrial site, highlighting the vast scale of forced labor that fueled the Nazi war effort.
Today, the Plaszow area is a nature preserve, but several memorials erected in the 1960s stand as poignant symbols of remembrance. The tour also includes a visit to the nearby Liban Quarry, where a replica of the camp was built for the filming of Schindler’s List (1993), further underscoring the tragic history of the area.
This tour is a deeply moving educational experience that not only explores the site of unimaginable suffering but also honors the resilience of the people who lived through it. It offers a chance to reflect on the lives lost and the enduring impact of the Holocaust.
