Description
Modern history of Poland cannot be told without diving into the chronicles of Kazimierz and the Jewish Ghetto in Krakow. On this tour you will visit Jewish heritage sites and learn about the long but turbulent history of the Jewish community in Poland. The 3-hour tour will start in Kazimierz, which for centuries was a place of coexistence and intermingling of ethnic Polish and Jewish cultures. One of the first sights you will see is the 19th century Tempel Synagogue, known for its stunning Moorish-style interior. You will follow the historic Szeroka street, which features Jewish houses, restaurants and other establishments, as well as the 16th century Remah Synagogue with a cemetery. You may be able to recognize some of these places from Steven Spielberg’s film Schindler's List. Your Private Guide will invite you to visit either the Tempel Synagogue, or the Old Synagogue at Szeroka, which now houses a museum of Krakow Jewish culture and history. You will then cross the Vistula River to get to the Podgórze district, where Nazi’s established the Krakow Ghetto during WWII. Hear the tragic stories of the Polish Jews who were forcibly relocated from Kazimierz into the ghetto, only to be later deported to Auschwitz and other concentration camps. See the monument at the Ghetto Heroes Square and Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory to learn about the exploitation, terror, and persecution of local Polish Jews under the German occupation. Choose the 4-hour tour to enrich your experience with a visit to the Remah Synagogue and Cemetery. The synagogue is an active place of worship and plays an important role in protecting the heritage of Polish Jews. You will notice that the courtyard walls carry inscriptions in memory of the local Jews who perished in the Holocaust. At the Old Jewish Cemetery, you will find gravesites of many notable Polish Jews, including Rabbi Moses Isserles, Avraham Yehoshua Heschel and Yossele the Holy Miser.Includes
