Description
Established in October 1942 by Nazi German occupiers on former Jewish cemeteries in Kraków, Plaszow began as a forced-labor camp for Jews from the liquidated Kraków Ghetto. From July 1943, it also detained Polish prisoners in a penal-labor section. In January 1944, it was redesignated as a concentration camp and later served as a transit point for Hungarian Jews sent to Auschwitz. Over 35,000 people were held at Plaszow, with around 6,000 murdered. Executions occurred at various locations within the camp, now marked by mass graves and memorials.
Your expert guide will show you the remaining sites, including the Grey House, ruins of the pre-burial hall, traces of Jewish cemeteries, the roll-call square, and paths once paved with gravestone fragments. You will stop at major memorials like the Monument of Torn-Out Hearts and learn how the camp was divided into living, hospital, administrative, and industrial sections.
The tour also covers Oskar Schindler’s connection to Plaszow. Through his enamelware factory, he secured work permits for Jewish prisoners, protecting them from deportation. Schindler later arranged their transfer to his plant in Brünnlitz, saving over a thousand lives—a story integral to the camp’s history.
Unlike camps with preserved buildings, Plaszow offers open grounds and silence for reflection. Few physical remains exist, making it a place to confront history and honor victims rather than a spectacle.
