Description
Krakow's Old Town is the historical central district, featuring the Rynek Główny (Main Square), the largest medieval town square in Europe. Key landmarks include St. Mary's Basilica, the Church of St. Wojciech, the Church of St. Barbara, and the Renaissance cloth hall Sukiennice, all surrounded by traditional kamienice (row houses) and noble residences.
Kazimierz, located south of the Old Town, was the center of Jewish life for over 500 years before World War II. Rediscovered in the 1990s, it has since developed into a lively neighborhood with historical sites, cafes, and art galleries. It remains a significant location for Jewish culture and pilgrimage.
Podgórze is historically significant as the location of the Kraków Ghetto during World War II, established by the Nazis in 1941. The ghetto was liquidated two years later, and many residents were killed locally or at nearby concentration camps including Płaszów, Auschwitz, and Bełżec.
