Description
Take a guided day trip from Krakow to Bochnia, Poland's oldest salt mine and part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Royal Salt Mines. Bochnia is the quieter, less crowded option compared to its better-known neighbor in Wieliczka, and the mine has two features you will not find in most other salt mines. After pickup in Krakow, you ride about an hour east to the mine entrance. From there you descend underground and start the guided route through corridors and chambers that have been worked for more than 700 years. Explore the history at your own pace with a multilingual audio guide, while your English-speaking tour host stays with the group to handle logistics and answer any questions. The two main attractions are the underground train and the boat crossing. The miners' train carries you along historic tunnels deep inside the mine and gives you a real sense of the scale of the site. Later, you cross an underground salt lake by boat. Almost no salt mine in Europe offers this kind of crossing, and it is the main reason travelers pick Bochnia over the usual alternatives. The route also passes through huge excavated chambers shaped by centuries of salt extraction, with salt-carved walls and historic mining equipment along the way. Multimedia displays in some sections bring the older periods of mining to life, but the chambers themselves do most of the work. After the visit you board the vehicle for the return trip to Krakow. The full experience takes about half a day. This tour fits travelers who want a day out of Krakow that goes beyond standard sightseeing - a real underground attraction, with a train ride and a boat ride built into the route, in a UNESCO site that is still relatively under the radar.Includes
